HOUSTON, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- An 18-wheel trailer rig collided with a passenger bus on a rural road in the U.S. state of Texas early Thursday, killing two people and injuring four others, local media reported.

The collision happened about 1 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) on a rural road near Carthage city in east Texas, about 300 km away from Texas' largest city Houston, local TV reported.

The bus, traveling from Houston to Chicago, was northbound in the right lane when it suddenly veered into the path of the trailer in the left lane. The trailer hit the bus on the left side behind the driver's seat, ejecting the bus driver through the windshield and a passenger through a side window, killing both, according to the report.

Three passengers in the bus suffered injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening. The trailer driver was also injured and airlifted to a hospital, but his condition was not immediately known.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.
