ROME, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Italian authorities said on Thursday that at least 82 migrants died after their boat capsized off Lampedusa Island of Italy and hundreds were lost at sea.

Rescue teams recovered the corpses of 82 people who drowned as they tried to swim after their boat ran aground. The fishing boat was reportedly transporting around 500 migrants, including many women and children.

Some 150 migrants were rescued while coastal guards were checking if there were more victims of the unfortunate crossing, according to ANSA news agency.

Thousands of North African migrants arrive in the Italian southernmost island every year, but many die in attempting the Mediterranean crossing.
