6 killed as train derails in western India

11-15-2013 14:33 BJT

NEW DELHI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and more than 50 others injured as several compartments of an express train derailed in the western Indian state of Maharashtra on Friday, a senior railway official said.

"The mishap took place near Ghoti between Igatpuri and Nasik stations in the state at 6 a.m. (local time). The Mangala Express was travelling to Ernakulam in the southern state of Kerala from the Indian capital," he said on condition of anonymity.

While six bodies have been pulled out of the mangled coaches so far, the death toll may rise as many more are still feared to be trapped inside, the official said, adding that the injured have been admitted to local hospitals where the condition of some are said to be serious.

Local TV channels showed footage of rescuers trying to bring out those trapped from inside the derailed coaches of the train, and reported, quoting eyewitnesses, that several compartments jumped rail and then came on top of each other.

Meanwhile, the mishap has affected rail traffic in the region, with many trains being delayed.

The Indian Railways has ordered a probe into the incident, the official said.

India's state-owned railways operates 9,000 passenger trains, and carries some 18 million passengers daily.

But, it's safety record is not that good. According to figures, over 1,200 people were killed in rail mishaps in India in the past five years.
