Although light is universal throughout the world, the Lyon Festival of Lights has its own meaning in this modern time. It is a combination of art and techniques. It is not just a festival, but to show the whole city, said Georges Kepenekian, Lyon’s Deputy of Culture.

Scattered around various places in Lyon, the light works contain multiple formats such as animation, mapping and street light decorations, etc. Visitors can wander in the streets and park to encounter distinctive light installations perhaps just around a corner.

Jean-Francois Zurawick, Artistic Director of this event, said there is no theme of the festival. The organizer just let the designers make proposals to the festival committee and choose the buildings or any place in Lyon that they would like to show their works. If approved, they can work it out. The entire city is at their choice, and all places can be occupied. And this year, they have received 300 proposals worldwide.

Designers from Poland, Germany and other countries have also come to show their innovation. Chinese designer Li Li has been also involved in the event this year, adding more Chinese elements to the festival. “We encourage designers to make innovations. And the animated painted wall is a great innovation hence. Designers not only show their talented works here, but also convey some emotions via these works,” said Zurawick.

Originally people just put candles on the windowsill to commemorate Virgin Mary. Since 1999, Lyon Festival of Lights has been formally held for four days each year and demonstrated the electric lights in a professional way.

During the festival, all vehicles are prohibited in the main streets and squares.
