SUVA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's 2014 general election will be held on Sept. 17, the government announced Friday.

The one-day election will be a paid public holiday, said Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the country's attorney general and minister responsible for elections, at a press conference here.

Acting permanent secretary for justice Mohammad Saneem will resign on Monday to take up the role of supervisor of elections, he added.

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who came to power after the 2006 coup, has resigned as commander of the country's military forces and said he will form a political party to contest the upcoming general election.
