NCPA seeks to revive interest in opera, folk music

04-06-2014 00:17 BJT

NCPA is working with performers from home and abroad to inject new life into shows such as Opera and Chinese folk music. The goal is to boost interest in classic Chinese arts.

The attendance rate for symphonic concerts, folk music concerts and operas in 2013 was under 70 percent, a figure much lower than pop concerts and modern drama.

But the NCPA is looking to change that by teaming up with professional film crews from abroad and top Chinese performers. They are also planning to bring the classic opera "Turandot" to movie screens.

Vocalist Dai Yuqiang said, "Only about 2,000 people can hear us performing in a theatre on one night, but if we bring it to the silver screen, there are thousands if not tens of thousands of screens across the country. An opera show costs a couple hundred RMB, but a movie ticket is much cheaper. "

The cinema version of "Turandot" will hit theatres on April 16th.

Performance troupes are also teaming up with entertainment agencies to acquire professional market resources and promotion.
For example, the China Opera troupe have teamed up with the China Arts and Entertainment Group to deliver quality shows to more stages around the country.

Zhang Yafeng, director of China Opera Troupe, said, "We don’t have our own theatre, so we want to use the platform of our partner, the China Arts and Entertainment Group, to bring quality shows to more audiences. "

However not every show could become a commercial success, so the China Arts and Entertainment Group will have to decide which shows are worth investing in.
