Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe may lose use of arm

Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe - who is in intensive care at a Sydney hospital. The Australian is battling an infection, following surgery on a problematic shoulder. The virus is so bad, there are reports he could lose the use of his left arm.

Thorpe, seen here during a failed comeback attempt for the 2012 London Olympics, has suffered from shoulder problems in the past, and has had the joint operated on before.

The "Thorpedo," as he was dubbed in his prime, also has a history of depression and substance abuse problems, and in February was admitted to rehab, after he allegedly tried to break into a van.
