A 24 hour commemoration is being held to mark Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust remembrance day in Israel. Yom Hashoah is set on the 27th day of the seventh month in the Israeli calendar, to mark the anniversary of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising. This year’s commemoration began on Sunday night local time.

A ceremony attended by hundreds of people was held the Yad Vashem Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, to commemorate the six million European Jews killed by Germans during the World War Two. Both Israel’s President and Prime Minister used the occasion to remember the war victims and spell out the modern dangers Israel faces.

During the remembrance day, restaurants, cafes and places of entertainment close to mark the occasion, and radio and TV programming are dedicated almost entirely to documentaries about the Holocaust, interviews with survivors and memorials for the dead. On Monday, a siren will sound for two minutes as Israel comes to a standstill.
