Drug gangs and residents torch city buses in Rio

04-30-2014 07:42 BJT

With just 44 days until the start of the World Cup, parts of Rio de Janeiro have been engulfed in a wave of violence.

Police in the city have been trying to crack down on drug trafficking gangs. The focus on Tuesday was on the city’s Alemao slum complex. But residents in the area reacted angrily to the police presence, attacking city buses, forcing passengers out, before setting the buses on fire.

The violence comes after a 17-year-old man was killed in a different police operation. Tensions have been rising in recent months amid an ambitious security push to drive gangs out of several Rio neighborhoods and set up permanent police posts.
