President Xi urges "decisive action" against terrorism

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for "decisive action" against terrorist attacks, after a blast rocked a railway station in Urumqi, the capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The attack came as President Xi finished his tour of the region, which included visits to military garrisons in the region’s far west. He emphasized the importance of long-term stability in Xinjiang and the need to crush terrorism and separatism.

Following the blast at Urumqi South railway station in Xinjiang which left 3 dead and 79 wounded, President Xi said "The battle to combat violence and terrorism will not allow even a moment of slackness, and decisive actions must be taken to resolutely suppress the terrorists’ rampant momentum.


President Xi also said that the battle against separatism in Xinjiang would be long-term, complicated and acute. He called for ensuring social stability, and measures to safeguard people of all ethnic groups.

The blast in Urumqi took place on the last day of President Xi’s visit to Xinjiang, which focused on the region’s security.

On the first day of his tour, President Xi visited the People’s Liberation Army forces in Kashgar, where he reviewed their work reports on fighting terrorism. He encouraged soldiers to always remember their duties of safeguarding the country’s unity.

During his trip, Xi watched a military drill target on anti-terrorism in suburban Urumqi.

In meeing with local soldiers, President Xi said the long-term stability of Xinjiang is vital to the whole country’s reform, development and stability, its unity, ethnic harmony and national security as well as to the great revival of the Chinese nation. He added, safeguarding the country’s unity and fighting separatism are of the utmost importance and in the basic interest of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Xi greeted workers, farmers, scholars and people from all walks of life ahead of International Workers’ Day. He praised model workers for their professional dedication and hailed them as the "pride of the motherland and the people".
