As part of the ongoing Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, the Shanghai Ballet has presented a contemporary work called "Dream Back to Shanghai" Thursday night at the Shanghai Grand Theater. The gala also marks the 35th anniversary of the ballet company.

The dance is in four chapters. The first tells the story of a girl dreaming about all the positive things in her life, which are symbolized by different kinds of butterflies. The second shows a woman's dilemma in choosing between two men. The third is the story of a male dancer's nightmare, with a dark cloud of black butterflies on the stage. And the last is about a woman recalling five men she has met.

French choreographer Bertrand d'At started to work with the Shanghai Ballet eight years ago. He says the concept is to combine contemporary movement with classical music.

"It's talking about Shanghai, but not so much about Shanghai the city, but more my relation with the dancers of the Shanghai Ballet. It's about friendship, about remembrance, some attractions. So it's a bit nostalgic piece, with very romantic music." said Bertrand d'At, Choreographer.

"To me, dancing with five different men in the last chapter is a challenge. Apart from the dance itself, eye contact and facial expression are also very important in presenting the story." said Fan Xiaofeng, Principal Dancer, Shanghai Ballet.

For more than three decades, the Shanghai Ballet has been presenting both folk-infused Chinese ballet and classical western masterpieces, including "Romeo and Juliet" and “The Butterfly Lovers”.
