The film "Grace of Monaco" has received a poor response from critics and journalists ahead of officially opening the Festival. Nicole Kidman stars in the film, and is doing her best to defend its portrayal of Hollywood star Grace Kelly, but it may not be enough.

The opening film stars Nicole Kidman as the Hollywood actress Grace Kelly, who became the Princess of Monaco when she married Prince Rainier. Kelly died after a car crash in 1982 in the hills of the principality, not far from Cannes.

Speaking at an earlier news conference before ascending to the red carpet, Kidman responded to criticism from the Monaco royal family, who called the film a "farce".

"Obviously I feel sad because I think that the film has no malice towards the family or particularly towards Grace or Rainier. It's fictionalised obviously. We've said that. It's not a biopic. There's the essence of truth but as with a lot of these things, you take dramatic license at times," said Nicole Kidman, actress of "Grace of Monaco".

Opinions of the film were mixed, although most agreed that is wasn't the right choice for the opener.

Kidman also says periods of her own life have helped her relate more closely to Grace Kelly.

"I mean I think love is the core emotion and without that... and I've certainly existed without that in my life and it's a very empty life. I've always said that when I won the Oscar I went home and I didn't have that in my life. And I kind of... that was the most intensely lonely period of my life," Kidman said.

"Grace of Monaco" is debuting in Cannes out of competition, with 18 films vying for the Palme d'Or.
