China excludes Windows 8 from government computers

05-21-2014 07:36 BJT

China has announced that it will ban the use of the Windows 8 operating system in new government computers. The move is said to ensure computer security after Microsoft stopped offering security updates and support for its previous operating system, Windows XP.

All desktop, laptop and tablet PCs purchased by state organs must be installed with operating systems other than Windows 8, according to an online statement by the Central Government Procurement Center. The measure only applies to computers used by government offices, while the personal computer market is expected to stay unaffected.
