Official: China a victim of US cyber theft

05-21-2014 16:09 BJT

A day after the US indicted five Chinese military officers for cyber-theft, China’s State Internet Information Office released data to show the number of times China has faced cyber attacks from the US. The data is stunning in its scope and as Ai Yang reports, makes quite evident, the duplicity attitude to cyber-theft on the part of the US.

According to the State Internet Information Office, in the past two months, US-based servers took control of about 1.2 million Chinese computers. Also, Chinese websites suffered 57,000 backdoor attacks from US-based computers.

According to the statistics, a total of 14 million Chinese computers were controlled by overseas servers in 2012, 60 percent more than the year before. The most of these attacks were found to have originated from the United States. Chinese universities, scientific institutions and listed companies are frequent victims of cyber attacks. Information recently provided by former US National Security Agency contractor Snowden reveal the US had hacked into the servers of Huawei, the Chinese telecoms company. Huawei has experienced difficulties entering the American market as Washington suspects it has links to the Chinese military. No evidence has ever been presented to back up the claim. Experts say the US move is symbolic, displaying anxiety and mistrust.

The China-US cyber group was set up to ease tensions between the two countries. However now that the work group has been suspended and the mutual trust jeopardized. Experts say China might take further actions if the indictment will not be dropped.
