Thai farmers march in support of military takeover

05-27-2014 17:18 BJT

Thousands of Thai farmers have marched to an army base in Bangkok in a show of gratitude to the nation’s new military ruler for disbursing long-delayed payments to rice farmers.

On Monday, General Prayuth Chan-ocha gave the green light for the Finance Ministry to seek billions of dollars in loans to pay debts owed to rice farmers. The farmers were under a rice scheme instituted by the ousted government. Prayuth has vowed to start to move quickly to tackle the country’s economic problems, along with maintaining order.

Protests by groups that tried to oust former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for months, have hurt business confidence in the country. As a result, this has halted much government spending, and scared away tourists. The economy is on the brink of recession after shrinking 2.1 percent in the first quarter of this year.
