Some tech news now, and an app called HelloFood. It is an online takeaway service that allows users to order food online from a range of restaurants. It's now available in 6 countries, including Ghana.

Food delivery that’s mobile in more ways than one. HelloFood’s launched its iOS and android application across 6 African countries last month. The company is confident their app is the fastest, and easiest, way to order food online.

"On the website all the menus are easy to read - they pass what we call the no waitress test. That means that if you were at a restaurant you would never have to call over a waitress to ask them what an item is." Yolande Lee, country director of HelloFood Ghana, said.

In Ghana the service is different than elsewhere in Africa. Most restaurants don’t have a delivery service. HelloFood provides that, as well as the digital platform.

"There’s an obvious market for food delivery. Particularly with corporate clients. They might not have a very long lunch break and to leave and sit in traffic for half and hour isn’t very feasible for most people so it’s very easy to show restaurants the value of something like Hellofood." Lee said.
Time to put the app to the test.

So I’ve just downloaded the HelloFood app. And I’ve created an account for which I needed to put in my name, mobile number, address for delivery as well as my email address. So I am now going to try and order some food.

The Ghana service is only available in the capital. It’s works around restaurants’ opening hours - so as there’s no 24-hour restaurants in Accra, midnight feasts are out. But for lunch more than 40 restaurants were available. Take-away prices are the same as eat-in, with a fixed delivery charge on top. As soon as my order was confirmed, I received a call to check the address and answer any queries.

There are obvious challenges to food delivery in Accra. First, heavy traffic - second, many streets don’t have names or houses numbers. That can make deliveries tricky.

However, the food did eventually find its way and within the 50 minutes estimated when I placed my order. HelloFood’s mobile app wants to cash in on Ghana’s 23% mobile browsing penetration. Expansion beyond the capital is planned, for later this year.
