The Netherlands have achieved an overwhelming 5-1 victory over Spain in Group B’s opening match.

At the 27th minute in the first half, Xabi Alonso scored Spain’s first goal on a penalty kick. And just a minute before half time, the Netherlands’ Robin Van Persie scored to tie. And in the second half, Arjen Robben scored to put the Netherlands ahead. The gap was widened by three more goals, giving the Netherlands the victory in the much-anticipated game.

Earlier, in Group A, Mexico earned a crucial three points with a 1-nil win over the African team Cameroon. It was a 61st-minute goal by Forward Oribe Peralta that broke the deadlock and put Mexico ahead.
