UNHCR: refugee population in Iraq rises to nearly 800,000

06-17-2014 17:34 BJT

The U.N. refugee agency, the UNHCR, says Iraq’s refugee population has increased by almost 800,000 this year as the government struggles to deal with insurgents and Islamic militants.

Hundreds of Iraqi men, women and children have fled their homes, fearing violence, kidnapping and rape after Islamic militants seized large part of northern Iraq. The agency says 300,000 people fled for safety this week in Erbil and Duhok. Last week, the agency reported that nearly 480,000 people had been driven from their homes by the fighting.
