06-17-2014 19:41 BJT

State Councilor Yang Jiechi is set to arrive in Vietnam for a 2-day visit. Yang Jiechi’s visit is the highest-level meeting between the two governments since a diplomatic row broke out between Beijing and Hanoi, after Vietnam's provocative actions around China’s giant oil rig in the South China Sea on May 2nd increased tensions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying briefed the media on the arrangements of State Councilor Yang Jiechi’s visit to Vietnam.

"Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi is to attend a dialogue of the China-Vietnam Steering Committee on Cooperation. It is a governmental mechanism to coordinate the bilateral ties between the two sides. Yang Jiechi will meet his Vietnamese counterpart, the deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh. He will also meet with other senior officials. In addition to other issues, Yang Jiechi plans to discuss current tensions between the countries in the South China Sea. China has repeatedly called for the Vietnamese side to look at the big picture, and move with China in the same direction to deal with it properly," she said.
