Iraqi police say pro-government Shi'ite militiamen have killed nearly four dozen Sunni detainees after insurgents tried to storm a jail northeast of Baghdad. The incident took place on Tuesday in the city of Baqouba, about 50 kilometers from the capital.

A local morgue official said many of the detainees had bullet wounds to the head and chest. But the Iraqi military insisted the Sunni inmates were killed by mortar shells in the attack.

Also on Tuesday, a car bomb hit Baghdad's Shi'ite-dominated Sadr City district. Police and medical sources said the attack killed 12 people and wounded 30 in a crowded outdoor market. No one has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing.
