It is day seven of the World Cup in Brazil, and world champions Spain were looking to bounce back from their 5-1 opening defeat to the Netherlands as they took on Chile in Group B. But instead it was more humiliation for the Spanish as Chile recorded their second victory of the tournament to ensure that they will join the Netherlands in the next round.

Chile took the lead in the 19th minute through forward Eduardo Vargas. And just moments before half-time, Charles Aranguiz doubled the lead to seal a 2-0 win. It means Spain now have only one more match to play in this year’s World Cup — a now meaningless encounter with Australia in their final group game next week.

Highly-spirited Chile stunned Spain 2-0 in their World Cup Group B second-round match here on Wednesday, sending the defending world champions packed and fixing a last-16 berth for themselves.
