Uruguay beats Italy 1-0 to advance from Group D

Uruguay has beaten Italy in their Group D match, earning a place in the knockout round.

The teams were deadlocked 0-0 at halftime, with Italy controlling much of the first half with its passing accuracy in midfield while Uruguay relied on swift counter-attacks and even attempted to shoot from its own half.

In the 59th minute, Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio was shown a straight red card for lunging over the top of the ball at Arevalo Rios.

In the 81st minute, Captain Diego Godin leapt highest to nod home a corner for Uruguay.

The win means Uruguay will join Group D counterpart Costa Rica in the last 16.
