Chinese companies find World Cup good for business

The World Cup is generating tremendous enthusiasm in China. And businesses here are cashing in on the gala in Brazil. Beer consumption is soaring. And e-commerce sites are generating bigger sales with big discounts and home delivery.

17 million cans of beer were snapped up on Tmall and Taobao during the first 7 days of the World Cup. 57-percent of beer purchases are made by men. China’s sports lottery sales have also been boosted. Daily sales since the World Cup started have quadrupled to more than 400 million yuan, according to the China Sports Lottery Administration Center. It’s estimated that sales will top 10 billion yuan. One item seeing a drop in sales are condoms.

Data from Taobao show 220,000 condoms were sold on the eve of the World Cup, while only 150,000 sold on opening day of the event.
