Seven German players had flu before match including Mats Hummels, but his header gave the Germans a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

France, scoring eight goals in the first two games at the tournament, were pushing for an equalizer. But both clear chances from Mathieu Valbuena and Karim Benzema were thwarted by Germany keeper Manuel Neuer.

Germany would hold on to the 1-0 win over France to reach a fourth consecutive World Cup semi-finals.

Joachim Loew’s side will set up a match-up with hosts Brazil in the semi-finals. It will be a repeat of the 2002 final in Japan where Brazil won 2-0 to win their fifth World Cup title.
