It is Merkel's seventh trip to China as German chancellor. It follows Chinese president Xi Jinping's visit to Germany in March. The frequency of meetings between the countries's leaders highlight their flourishing economic ties.

Bilateral trade between the two hit $161.6 billion in 2013. Germany is China’s number-one trade partner in the EU. Germany accounts for nearly half of all EU exports to China while nearly a quarter of China’s exports to the EU end up in Germany. And China is the top foreign investment destination for German companies.

More than 8,000 German enterprises have invested more than 20 billion dollars in China so far. Chinese investment in Germany is lagging but growing fast.
