American stocks fell sharply lower on Thursday on the news that a Malaysian Airlines passenger jet was shot down near the Ukraine-Russia border.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.94% while the S&P 500 dropped 1.18%, its biggest one-day percentage fall since April 10th. Investors sold stocks in a move to avoid risk and poured more money into safe-haven investments such as gold and U.S. government bonds.
