The heavy metal rock landscape has become a little younger thanks to three middle school boys from Brooklyn, New York. Their band is called Unlocking the Truth, and is already making news in the music world. The band just signed a US$1.7 million contract with Sony last week for a two-album deal.

The trio is made up of Malcolm Brickhouse and Alec Atkins, both 13, and 12-year-old Jarrad Dawkins.

The trio is made up of Malcolm Brickhouse and Alec Atkins, both 13, and 12-year-old Jarrad Dawkins. The band is working on its first studio album. Atkins says that long term goal is simple: "To become one of the biggest heavy metal bands."

The band members’ love of metal formed by watching wrestling and playing arcade games, and Metallica, Slipknot and Disturbed are just a few of their favorites. The band officially formed two years ago, after Brickhouse and Dawkins recruited their former preschool buddy. Since then, the group has gone from performances in Times Square to opening for Guns N' Roses, and doing its own set at the Coachella music festival. The boys say getting use to the fame has been fun.

Each member shares writing duties, and say the process is collaborative. "Either me or Malcolm come up with a main riff. And then Jarad comes up with the drums," Atkins said.

But in between all the shows and studio sessions, the group are typical tweens. When asked who is best at charming the girls, Dawkins says that they all have luck with the ladies, but their social media statuses proves differently.

In the end, the guys say all that matters is that they enjoy what they're doing. Next up for the band is a performance at the Heavy MTL festival in Montreal on August 9.
