Muslims all over India are preparing to celebrate Eid, the end of the holy month of Ramadan. And shopkeepers are stocking up on the latest fashions ahead of the festive occasion.

Popular markets in New Delhi are buzzing with Eid shoppers. They are here to buy clothes and accessories to wear.

Colourful, bright, traditional salwar suits are on display outside the shops. Men and women are busy browsing the collection on display in front of them, touching the fabric and deciding what they like.

One shopkeeper says that people are shopping for suits inspired by the actresses on television soaps.

"Most people come and ask for long salwar suits, the kind that is worn on Television soaps. Those are in demand and Pakistani designs are also popular, mostly in cotton with stone-work. Men prefer to wear kurtas with designs around the neck, sleeves and on the back," said Mohammad Shakil, a shopkeeper.

Along with salwar suits and kurtas, fancy burkas are also sold in the market. Those with embroidery, stone work and embellishments are on display everywhere.

Women also buy accessories like earrings, bangles, necklaces and brooches to match their new outfits. The styles in favour are heavily influenced by Pakistani and Saudi fashions.

"Demand for the dresses that are famous in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has grown tremendously this year, especially on the occasion of Eid. The sales have increased as most of our customers prefer long dresses, floor-touching dresses and kaftan dresses," shopkeeper Khalied Bashir said.

In a local garment factory, sewing machines buzz furiously in order to keep up with demand. The clothing brands are updating the traditional look of kurtas and burkas with new designs.

Eid al-Fitr falls on July the 28th in India this year.
