Lotus cultural festival opens in northern China

07-26-2014 00:29 BJT

With summer just about halfway through, lotus flowers across the country are in full bloom. Although lotuses are traditionally found in southern China, here in the north, people can also share in the beauty. A lotus-themed cultural festival has just kicked off Thursday in the city of Tieling, in nothern China's Liaoning province.

Here at the Tieling Lotus Lake Wetland, the lotus spreads its grace and beauty over more than 10 million square meters.

It's hard to imagine that this reservoir was once heavily polluted, but that's how it was until 2007, when local officials initiated the Lotus Lake National Wetland Park.

Now, visitors get to see over 800 different kinds of lotuses, and the view across the park is panoramic, with pavilions reflected in flower-dotted waters.

"I've never seen so many different kinds of lotuses in one place. I want to capture the beauty with my camera," a visitor said.

"Like in the ancient poems, lotuses grow in the mud, yet emerge pure and unblemished in the summer sun," a visitor said.

The wild lotuses also provide the perfect playground for birds in the area, as wild geese and swans flock in. The lotus culture festival runs til mid September.
