Grondona's funeral held in Argentina

08-02-2014 15:55 BJT

A sad day in Argentina, as the longtime President of the country's Football Association was laid to rest in Buenos Aires. Julio Gron-dona died on Wednesday at the age of 82, but he will always be remembered for his role in helping steer his nation to some of its greatest moments on the pitch.

Grondona, who was nicknamed the Godfather, led the FA for a record 35 years, eventually becoming a FIFA Vice President as well. He remained active in the affairs of both organizations until his death this past week. During Grondona's nine terms in charge of the FA, Argentina competed in three World Cup Finals, winning one of them in 1986. The country also claimed two Olympic championships, and won six Under-20 World Cup titles.
