Five years ago, archaeologists in Serbia discovered one of the most intact mammoth fossils ever to see daylight. Now, a mammoth museum has been built near the capital of Serbia, and is welcoming visitors from far and wide to see the unique finding.

Vika is a 6-meter-long adult mammoth. Archaeologists spent a month planning how to transport the fossil from the site of its discovery, and they had to be very careful.

A one million year old mammoth fossil. It was discovered just 100 kilometres east of the capital Belgrade. It's now on display at the Mammoth Museum in Serbia. The archaeologists named it "Vika" , and it's entire skeleton is preserved, making it a rare discovery.

"An entirely preserved mammoth fossil is very rare, only three others have been discovered in the world. Another was also discovered in Serbia, and the third is a baby mammoth in Siberia," Archaeologist Miomir Korac said.

Vika is a 6-meter-long adult mammoth. Archaeologists spent a month planning how to transport the fossil from the site of its discovery, and they had to be very careful.

"It probably weighed 10 tons. The fossil is 1 meter tall and 6 meters long. We made a steel frame to transport it. We don't want to damage a single bone in the fossil," Miomir Korac said.

The museum also showcases other fragments of mammoth remains discovered at the same site. And it's not just archaeologists who are drawn here, but also tourists and children, who enjoy the mammoth themed playgrounds.

The area near Belgrade used to be a hotspot for digging up Roman artifacts. It's only in recent decades that mammoth fossils began to emerge, a discovery that has brought more attention to the region.
