The Hundred-Foot Journey, a film produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Helen Mirren about an Indian restaurant and a French Michelin-starred eatery, premiered Monday in New York.

The Hundred-Foot Journey is the tale of how the opening of an Indian restaurant next to a famous French eatery stirs up trouble. Set in a town in the south of France, it prompts a battle over cuisine and culture.

Named 'The Hundred-Foot Journey', the film tells a story between an Indian restaurant and a French Michelin-starred eatery.

"It's a movie about love and understanding and it's a movie about the spaces between the cultures and how we fill those spaces so the cultures can basically come together and in this picture we have the French culture, we have the Indian culture but it really speaks a universal truth, so it doesn't leave out Americans, doesn't leave out Spanish, doesn't leave out anyone because it's representative of another way to sort of live in peaceful co-existence," Spielberg said.

"I think that, also that it was shot in France 'cause I'm a big Francophile. I love France. I love the French countryside, the French culture, the French language. I speak pretty good French. I really wanted to do the whole role in French but I couldn't because it's an American movie," Mirren said.

The film also co-stars relative newcomers Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon.

"The movie really is about people who are overcoming adversity and going beyond limitations in life and really going after their higher purpose and that takes bravery and that takes risk and that's what 'The Hundred-Foot Journey' means. That's what the hundred feet of The Hundred-Foot Journey actually indicates. So that's what the movie's about, and everyone can relate to it," Dayal said.

"It's about so many different things. It's about love, friendship, family, traveling, passion, grief. It's about all of those things; food, of course," said Le Bon.

The movie opens in US theaters this Friday. Its first release in Asia will be in Hong Kong on August 21.
