'How To Get Away With Murder' has two things immediately going for it. It is produced by Shonda Rhimes and it stars Viola Davis. Sitting down with her, Ms. Davis explained the show and her character.

"It is a show that centers on this criminal defense attorney who is also a criminal law professor at a fictitious Ivy League school. It is about her and a murder mystery involving her students that will eventually reveal something very sinister – and that’s all I can say," she said.

A Tony Award-winning actress, Viola Davis has enjoyed success on film as well as the stage, appearing in such movies as The Help and Doubt each garnering an Academy award nomination.

"We’ve seen this trend where lot’s of a-list movie actors are making their way to television. What are your comments on this trend? What are your personal reasons for doing this?" reporter asked.

"The material. The material. Nobody is writing like this for me in movies. Not like this in a way that’s sexual and intriguing and very vulnerable and you go wherever the material is whether it’s TV, film, or even the stage," she said.

How To Get Away With Murder is produced by Shonda Rhimes, the prolific producer that has won a combined 36 awards for herself and her actors.

Reporter: "Shonda Rhimes has surprised us with great shows like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy. What do you think audiences can expect from this particular show?"

A new show is catching the attention of critics, called 'How To Get Away With Murder'.

"I think that they will find it irresistible. I think that they will find it very moving – probably in horrific ways and I think that they will find it very addictive in terms of the characters, the murder mystery, trying to stay ahead of it - not quite being able to. Soon as you feel like you’ve figured something out I think it will shift. That’s the great thing about this show. There’s a number of aspects in this show that I think people will love," she said.

Her character, Professor Annalise Keating, is described as a brilliant, charismatic, and seductive criminal law professor whose students end up using her lectures in real life when they get entangled in a murder plot.

Reporter: "What do you see in yourself in that character?"

Viola Davis: "Nothing in myself, other than she’s black – I’m black, that she has a husband – I have a husband - but other than that, nothing."

In order to get into that character what do you have to do as an actress?

"That’s a long story but for me I do a lot of investigative work in terms of finding out what makes her tick – who she is as a human being? What gets her up in the morning and there’s a number of things that I look to. Other than just studying a law professor – she’s more than just a law professor – she’s an actual person. What’s in her past? What’s her memories? Who does she love? Who does she not love? What colors that she like? And then slowly it’s like a Mister Potato – putting a Mister Potato Head together. You get a human being," she said.

Viola Davis, as one would expect, is magnetic in this role and finally given the kind of large-scale leading role the big screen has never quite provided for her. How To Get Away With Murder airs on ABC and premieres this fall.
