72-hour ceasefire in Gaza ends without agreement

08-08-2014 14:17 BJT

A 72-hour cease-fire in the Gaza Strip has ended without agreement on an extension between Israel and Hamas.

In its latest statement, Hamas said that it is now ready to fight. Its spokesman earlier said that Palestinian factions refused to extend the ceasefire, but are continuing talks in Cairo on a long-term truce.

According to the Israeli military, at least five rockets have been fired from Gaza since the ceasefire ended. It also said that two rockets were fired when the ceasefire still had hours remaining. But this was denied by Hamas.

On Thursday, Hamas leading member Ezzat al-Rishq said in a brief statement that the Palestinian delegation negotiating with Israel in Cairo will achieve the demands of its people. Al-Rishq’s remarks came in response to an earlier call of Hamas’s armed wing to not extend the existing ceasefire until its demands, which include Israel lifting the blockade on Gaza, are met.
