08-08-2014 17:25 BJT

The self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, has announced his resignation.

Alexander Borodai was speaking at a news conference in the eastern Ukrainian city. He said the region should be ruled by a person who is originally from the area. Borodai is reportedly a Russian citizen from Moscow. He will stay on first Deputy Prime Minister.

Borodai named Alexander Zakharchenko, the commander of a local militant group called "Oplot", as his successor.

Zakharchenko said his policy would be the same as that of Borodai - the independence and well being of the citizens of the Donetsk People’s Republic. He also said they are planning some attack operations.

"The situation is really tense, but not as critical as some Ukrainian politicians might hope. I, personally, don’t see any problems with us fighting. Yes, the situation is difficult, yes, the enemy is strong, but our fighting spirit is untouched. I completely do not understand why they are fighting us, why they are here, and so on," Zakharchenko said.
