US drops more food and water for Iraqi refugees

08-09-2014 16:28 BJT

US defense officials say American planes have conducted a second air-drop of food and water for thousands of refugees trapped in the Sinjar mountains, in northern Iraq. Most of the refugees are members of the Yazidi religious minority.

Chief spokesman for the Pentagon, Rear Admiral John Kirby, says three planes dropped 72 bundles of supplies.

The air-drop includes more than 28 thousand US military rations and more than 15 hundred gallons of drinking water. The planes are reported to have taken off from a number of different bases.

It’s the second humanitarian air-drop by the US in two days. The Pentagon says its military aircraft have so far delivered more than 36,000 meals in total, and nearly 7,000 gallons of water to the displaced Iraqis.
