Polls open for first directly-elected Turkish president

Turkish presidential election is the country’s first direct election. Turks are heading to the polls to vote for their new president.

The polls opened on Sunday morning, with people queuing up in line to cast their votes. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking to become the country’s first directly elected president.

According to the opinion polls, he is widely regarded as the front runner with a lead of around 20 percent. Turkey is a parliamentary democracy, and the prime minister is the head of its government. The president serves as the formal head of state.
