US senators to push for lifting lethal weapon sales ban to Vietnam

US senators John McCain and Sheldon Whitehouse are on a visit to Vietnam from Thursday to Sunday. They said that they will urge the US Congress to soon lift the ban on lethal weapon sales to Vietnam.

The two visiting senators made the remarks in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi on Friday while meeting with Vietnam’s National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung. Concerning the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, John McCain said that the TPP presents an opportunity for development not only for each country but for the whole region. The US visitors also expressed their desire to further strengthen ties with Vietnam, especially in areas of security, defense, ensuring network security, as well as building hydropower plants. Chinese experts say the US wishes to contervail China by putting forward the idea of arms sales to Vietnam.

"We believe the time has come for the United States to begin easing arms embargo on Vietnam. We are also ready to increase our security assistance to help Vietnam improve its maritime domain awareness... " McCain said.
