Fighting rages in Donetsk despite calls for cease-fire

Fighting raged in Ukraine’s eastern city Donetsk on Sunday as government forces tightened the noose around pro-Russian rebels and dismissed their offer of a cease-fire.

Ukraine’s military continued to pound the rebel stronghold of Donetsk on Sunday as talk of a ceasefire evaporated. It was the rebels who raised the possibility of a ceasefire, but they want Kiev to withdraw its troops first.

"A key starting point, condition, for talks regarding any sort of ceasefire is a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops of the territory of Donetsk People’s Republic." Said Elena Nikitina, Donetsk People's Republic Spokesman.

But government forces have the rebel stronghold surrounded and say the separatist fighters must surrender

"If there is an initiative then it has to be shown with practical actions, and not just words. If white flags come up and they lay down their arms, in this case nobody is going to shoot at them. We have not seen any practical steps yet, but just a statement." Said Ukrainian National Security and Defence Council.

As the shelling intensifies and life in Donetsk becomes increasing hard more and more people are fleeing the city

"It is impossible to live (here). There is no electricity, no water. And there is shelling every day. How can we live this way?" Said Elena Frolova, Donetsk resident.

Russia has repeatedly offered to send a humanitarian mission into eastern Ukraine but Western powers are concerned its just an excuse to send it troops. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says he would consider an aid mission, but only if it is international and unarmed.
