PM Maliki’s bloc says he has right to form gov’t

08-11-2014 19:26 BJT

A member of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s parliamentary bloc says the president must ask Maliki to form a new government or risk violating the constitution.

Mahmoud al-Hassan’s comment came after Iraq’s highest court ruled on Monday that Maliki’s bloc is the biggest in parliament. According to the constitution, the president must now ask Maliki to form a new government in Iraq.

Speaking on state television Sunday, Maliki accused the country’s Kurdish president is violating the constitution, for neglecting to name a prime minister from Iraq’s largest parliamentary bloc. A senior Iraqi official has said it would be "problematic" for Maliki to serve a third term.
