A choral symphony, titled 'Ode to Humanity', is a piece that pays tribute to the core spirit of Confucianism. Previously featured as the opening performance of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Creative Art Festival in late July, the symphony has just started on its 3-city tour in Taiwan. It's first stop was in Taipei on Friday night, at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.

It's a musical presentation of a philosophy believed to have influenced the values of Chinese people for some 25-hundred years. In five chapters, the work celebrates the five cornerstones of Confucianism, which are benevolence, righteousness, etiquette, wisdom and integrity.

"Ode to Humanity" debuted in 2011, and was performed to celebrate World Peace Day at the UNESCO Paris headquarters in 2013, to tremendous acclaim. The current Taiwan tour is the first time that the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra collaborates with guest musicians - 27 session musicians are from Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, while the 10 vocalists are members of the renowned Hong Kong Oratorio Society.

The show is the brainchild of Wang Jingsheng, a senior official of Shenzhen's municipal government. He believes these traditional moral standards are a source of national pride, which can be shared by Chinese people all over the world.

"The moral values in Confucianism is the root of Chinese people. They have been passed down for thousands of years, and we will spread them to all parts of the world," said Wang Jingsheng, publicity chief of CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee.

8 years in the making, the newly revised version of "Ode to Humanity" will continue its Taiwan tour in Taichung and Kaohsiung this week.
