Obama: Iraq's only lasting solution is an inclusive gov't

08-12-2014 10:20 BJT

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama has praised the appointment of the new Iraqi Prime Minister to replace Nouri al-Maliki. And he urged the formation of a new government as soon as possible.

"Today, President Massoum named a new Prime Minister-designate Dr Haider al-Ibadi. Under the Iraqi Constitution, there is an important step towards forming a new government that can unite Iraq’s different communities. Earlier today, Vice President Biden and I called Dr al-Ibadi to congratulate him and to urge him to form a new cabinet as quickly as possible, one that is inclusive of all Iraqis and one that represents all Iraqis. I pledge our support to him as well as to president Massoum and speaker Jabouri as they work together to form this government." Said Barack Obama, US President.

Obama called al-Ibadi’s nomination a "promising step forward". He urged all Iraqi political leaders to work peacefully through the political process. Obama also said the US had successfully carried out targeted air strikes in northern Iraq to support Kurdish fighters in their battle against fighters from the Islamic State, and conducted humanitarian relief missions to aid thousands of stranded women and children in the Sinjar mountains. Last week, the US Air Force launched the airstrikes after Obama’s authorization.
