Iraqi forces airlift Yazidis from Sinjar mountain

08-12-2014 15:18 BJT

Iraqi forces have airlifted minority Yazidis fleeing Islamic State militants from Sinjar mountain to Zakho, in the self-declared autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region.

Amateur footage obtained by the Associated Press showed Iraqi soldiers ushering men, women and children to safety in the northern Iraqi province of Dohuk.

Members of the Iraqi religious minority group have been trapped in northwest Iraq after fleeing from Sunni militants who seized Sinjar, near the Syrian border, last week. The Yazidis said the militants had given them the choice of converting to Islam or dying.
