Buddhist temples in the many different styles of the world are being erected in central China as part of an initiative to promote knowledge of Buddhist culture. A special area to house this collection has been set up at the site of the 2,000-year-old White Horse Temple in Luoyang, Henan province.

Ten Thai workers have been staying at the White Horse Temple, in Luoyang, for five years. They are helping to build and restore Thai-style Buddhist shrines, which are part of an international temple zone. The workers are in charge of the planning, design, and decoration.

"The Thai-style Buddha halls at the White Horse Temple were actually built in the 1990s. In the past five years, we’ve been working on the expansion and renovation of the project, aimed at enriching and highlighting Thai Buddhist culture. All the decorative materials, including the gemstones for the golden canopy have been shipped from Thailand," Thai craftsman Manot Pakpoomjit said.

Twenty-five-year-old Pakpoomjitt and his colleagues said that they were intrigued when they heard that the Temple Zone was being created. In the five years that they have been here, they have adapted to local life and learned some Chinese. Their work is certainly a labor of love.

"I can make 20,000 yuan a month in Thailand, but I only make 6,000 yuan a month in China. We’re not here for the money. We Thais are strong believers in Buddhism. We want more Chinese to know about Thailand and the Thai Buddhist style," Pakpoomjit said.

The White Horse Temple is designed to be China’s largest and most international Buddhist temple. When the work is finished, its International Temple Zone will feature 10 exotic shrines, all in the styles of different countries. The Indian shrine opened in May 2010, and earlier this year, Myanmar president Thein Sein inaugurated the Myanmar shrine.
