72-hour truce holds on 2nd day in Gaza

08-12-2014 19:17 BJT

The latest 3-day ceasefire in Gaza is in its second day, and appears to be holding, with Israeli tanks and soldiers near the Gaza border silent on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, Israeli and Palestinian negotiators resumed indirect talks mediated by Egypt to end the month-old conflict. But no details were released on the talks. Hamas is demanding an end to Israeli and Egyptian blockades of the Gaza Strip and the opening of a seaport in the enclave.

Israel says such a project should be dealt with only in any future talks on a permanent peace agreement with the Palestinians. A month of violence has killed over 1,900 Palestinians and 67 Israelis, while devastating wide tracts of Gaza.
