WHO backs use of experimental drugs

Full coverage: Ebola Outbreak in West Africa

A World Health Organization panel has backed the use of unproven drugs or vaccines as potential treatments or prevention in West Africa’s deadly Ebola outbreak.

The meeting comes as Liberia said it was getting an experimental drug following requests to the US government. The drug has been used on two US aid workers, who have shown signs of improvement.

The WHO says the use of experimental drugs is ethical because of the scale of the outbreak and the high number of deaths. But it stressed using these drugs required informed consent. Over one thousand people have died in West Africa from the virus so far.
