08-13-2014 00:19 BJT

Robin Williams' death has cast a gloom over the entertainment world and beyond. US president Barack Obama has said in a statement that the actor 'was one of a kind.' Actress Meryl Streep and director Phillip Noyce are among those who reflected on the loss of Williams.

There are many who walked down the red carpet with a heavy heart, at the New York premiere of new movie "The Giver". Actress Meryl Streep declined to comment publicly on Robin Williams' death.

"I don't have anything publicly to say. That's something I want to process myself," Meryl Streep said.

Veteran director Phillip Noyce said he had met Williams a few times and lauded him with the highest praise.

"He was one of the greatest comedians of all time. He made us laugh deep down in our hearts, in our minds, every part of our bodies. He made us laugh silly laughs and he made us laugh very, very, very, very complex laughs because he was so intelligent. He was a force of nature and also he was an extraordinary actor. His performance in Dead Poetics Society is unrivaled," Phillip Noyce said.

Social media sites were flooded with tributes to the actor.

Comedian Ellen Degeneres tweeted, "I can't believe the news about Robin Williams. He gave so much to so many people. I'm heartbroken." And from actor Steve Martin: "I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul."

Robin Williams was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times. He won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in 1997's "Good Will Hunting." The film, written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck - who each earned Oscars for Best Original Screenplay - propelled Williams's career as a dramatic actor, after years of being Hollywood's go-to comedic star.
