An unusual version of the classic ballet 'Swan Lake' will open in Shanghai September 25.

British choreographer Matthew Bourne's re-telling of the story uses male dancers for every role, even the traditionally female parts.

The original version of the Russian ballet is a love story between a prince and a princess who has been turned into a swan. But in Bourne's re-imagination of the story, the princess and her fellow swans are danced by men. Jonathan Ollivier will perform the traditionally female lead role.

"When the piece first came out 18, 19 years ago, it was shocking. A lot of people walked out of the theater, and they expected to see the traditional version of men and women dancing. And now it's completely accepted and it has become very iconic piece. It's actually a love story," Ollivier said.

"Male swans have better power and speed than female ones. The director not only changes the gender of the dancers, but also has his dramatic intentions," said Fei Yuanhong, Shanghai Culture Square program director.

Bourne's version of 'Swan Lake' debuted in 1995, and is the longest running ballet in London's West End and on Broadway. It has also been performed in Australia, Japan and Israel.

There will be 13 performances in Shanghai between September 25 and October 5. Tickets cost between 150 and 880 yuan.
