Suicide bomber attacks checkpoint near new PM’s house in Iraq

Two bombings rocked Baghdad on Tuesday. At least eight people were killed in a commercial area of Baghdad after a car bomb detonated late on Tuesday evening. 

Officials at the local hospital in the Karrada district confirmed the fatalities while residents and shopkeepers on Wednesday began to clean up the destruction caused by the bomb. 

Meanwhile a suicide bomber has attacked a checkpoint near the Baghdad home of Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Haider al-Abadi. Two police sources and local media have confirmed the attack which also occurred on Tuesday. 

One police source said the suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint that leads to the prime minister’s house. No details on casualties have been released and the prime minister’s office has not commented on the attack.
