Russian aid convoy resumes path toward Ukraine

08-14-2014 17:24 BJT

A Russian aid convoy has resumed its journey toward Ukraine, taking the road leading south toward the rebel-held city of Luhansk. That road will take the convoy directly into rebel held territory, despite an agreement to cross the border at a government-held post.

The International Committee of the Red Cross released a statement saying Ukraine and Russia still need to clarify border crossing procedures as well as customs clearances for convoys. The ICRC spokesman said the delivery of aid into eastern Ukriane should not be politicized. The Red Cross says it will send officials to Kiev and Moscow for talks on the agency’s strictly humanitarian role.

The convoy of about 262 vehicles had been parked since late Tuesday amid disagreement over how and where it would cross into Ukraine. Moscow sent the huge convoy of trucks in response to the humanitarian crisis in Luhansk. Authorities on Wednesday said the city had entered the 11th straight day without power supplies. Running water has dried up and the few working shops are selling only basic essentials. Rocket attacks remain a daily occurrence.
